During the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) Berlin last night, HUAWEI introduced their new flagship smartphone: the HUAWEI Mate 10 Series: HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro, and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 10.

The Mate 10 Series introduces a new, dedicated AI (Artificial Intelligence) Processor, the Kirin 970 chipset which is the world’s first AI processor for smartphones with a dedicated Neural Network Processing Unit.

But what does it really do? Why would we need such a thing?

According to HUAWEI, the Kirin 970 chipset will be reponsible for handling Real Time Scene, Object Recognition, and Accelerated Translator. For example, it will smartly choose the best camera settings by detecting the scene and objects within the scene. The AI will also feature an advanced digital zoom and handling the bokeh effect (Portrait mode).

Most smartphone users do not want to tinker with manual controls when shooting a picture, so this does sound like a cool feature for many who can just “point and shoot” an object or a scene.

Speaking of which, HUAWEI Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are powered by Leica dual lenses camera with an awesome aperture of f/1.6.

A 4,000mAh battery with a smart battery management system (thanks to the Kirin 970 chipset) understands and learns the behaviour of its user and intelligently allocates resources to maximise battery life.

Details are scarce at this point but I assume it learns what you normally do and don’t do in the time of day (for an example). When it learns that you don’t do much while you sleep or at a certain time of the day (like a weekly meeting), it might reduce the performance a bit to save battery life. This is just a rough guess as there are definitely more complicated things going on in the background, but it’s definitely interesting to learn more about it as reviews come by.

It has fast charging and will be powered by Android 8.0 feature underneath HUAWEI’s EMUI 8.0 user interface layered on top.

HUAWEI Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro pricing and availability in Australia:
