Logitech G309 LIGHTSPEED Review – A Versatile Wireless Gaming Mouse for Casual and Everyday Use

Logitech G has released a new gaming mouse, though it’s not quite what you might expect, especially if you’ve just recently purchased the Logitech G PRO X Superlight 2 Wireless Gaming Mouse (which is an amazing mouse). The G309 isn’t designed to surpass the G PRO X Superlight 2, so if you’re an esports athlete or professional gamer, you may want to look elsewhere.

What the Logitech G309 does best is being a great all-rounder wireless gaming mouse. It’s meant for gamers who want a reliable mouse that can be used for casual gaming and everyday tasks. But that doesn’t mean the Logitech G309 is mediocre. While it doesn’t have a high 8,000Hz polling rate, it’s still equipped with a high-performing sensor and premium materials.

LOGITECH G309 REVIEW – DESIGN AND FEATURES

The G309 stands out with its dual power options. It can be powered by either a single AA battery or the POWERPLAY wireless charging system (which I reviewed back in 2017). If you don’t have the POWERPLAY system and aren’t planning to get one (it is quite premium), you can still use the G309 with just a single AA battery.

Don’t let the AA battery fool you. According to Logitech G, the mouse can last up to 300 hours on a single AA battery, depending on usage and other factors. This longevity is likely due to the minimal RGB lighting – you’ll only see a couple of tiny LEDs. On Bluetooth, Logitech G claims the mouse can last up to 600 hours. For those using one mouse to game and work, switching between the two connectivity options will yield the best results in terms of battery life.

With the AA battery installed, the mouse weighs 86 grams, compared to 68 grams with the POWERPLAY system. While heavier than the G PRO X Superlight 2’s 60 grams, it’s still under 100 grams. The weight is concentrated towards the centre of the mouse, which may feel tiring during extended low-DPI gaming sessions as you have to lift the mouse up and down frequently.

The G309 looks sleek and feels well-built. It’s designed to accommodate all grip styles, including palm grip, and should fit both small and large hands comfortably. The team has improved the design based on previous models to enhance comfort and grip. While I have small hands, the G30 looks like it can fit both small and large hands alright.

I’ll also praise the design of this mouse. Inside the battery compartment, there’s a storage space for the wireless USB transceiver on the cover – a well-thought-out feature. The combination of materials used offers both aesthetic appeal and functionality.

The G309 is equipped with LIGHTFORCE switches, combining optical and mechanical switch design. They provide nice tactile feedback, both physical and auditory.

LOGITECH G309 REVIEW – GAMING EXPERIENCE

The G309 performs admirably across various game genres, including first-person shooters like Overwatch 2. It’s powered by the HERO 25K sensor with 400+ IPS, offering both precision and speed. The sensor proves reliable and excellent for tracking.

It’s been a while since I use a wired gaming mouse, simply because wireless gaming mouse these days are very responsive with no noticeable latency. The LIGHTSPEED wireless tech provides a gaming grade wireless connection and I’ve never had any latencies and issues even when the battle gets frantic.

Here’s a short montage gameplay of Overwatch 2 with the Logitech G309:

LOGITECH G309 REVIEW – CONCLUSION

G309 Review

The Logitech G309 strikes an excellent balance between gaming performance and everyday usability. While it may not cater to professional gamers who want higher polling rates and more advanced features, it offers a compelling package for casual gamers and those seeking a versatile mouse for both work and play.

It’s probably not for those who want the best performing wireless gaming mouse while having another mouse for work like myself. I’m currently using the Logitech Lift Vertical mouse to work and switch to Logitech G PRO X Superlight 2 whenever I want to play games (it’s also lighter and the weight is evenly distributed). But if you just want to have a mouse that can do both, then the G309 is definitely for you.

The fact that it can be powered by AA battery means that you won’t have any downtime where you have to charge the mouse with a cable as you can simply swap one battery with another pretty quickly.

Logitech G309 is available now and retails for A$149.95.
