Microsoft Socl (available at http://www.so.cl) is a new social network from Microsoft, now opened to the public (previously only accessible to limited number of people in Beta stage). Now, before you start screaming “Not another Social Network??”, it looks like Microsoft does not aim to rival Facebook or Google+ in this matter.
On the About Socl page, it seems that this new Microsoft social network is aimed as “an experimental research project, developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning”.
Microsoft even encourages people (or students, in this matter) to keep on using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or other social networks as Socl is not meant to replace them. Still don’t believe me? They actually meant it:
So.cl is not meant to replace existing full-featured search and social networking tools. It is an experimental research project using a minimal set of features which help combine search with the social network for the purpose of learning.
In fact, you can even use your Facebook account (or Windows Live) to login to Socl.
Microsoft Socl focuses more on doing research, sharing, and collaborating about it with your fellows.
The problem is, you still have to be accepted when you “login” at the first time and it may take a while. I registered in the morning and thought I could play around with it and told you guys about the functionality. Apparently, I haven’t got the acceptance email yet up til now.
