Sony Interactive Entertainment has unveiled its most visually compelling gaming console yet, the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro). Set to launch on 7 November 2024, this new addition to the PS5 family promises to deliver enhanced gaming experiences with cutting-edge technology and impressive performance upgrades.
The PS5 Pro boasts a significant boost in GPU performance, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling, all designed to take console gaming to new heights. With a recommended retail price of $1,199.95 AUD, the console comes equipped with a 2TB solid state drive and includes a DualSense wireless controller.
One of the standout features of the PS5 Pro is its upgraded GPU, which offers 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. This translates to up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, ensuring smoother and more responsive gaming experiences. The advanced ray tracing capabilities provide more dynamic reflection and refraction of light at more than double the speed of the current PS5, resulting in stunningly realistic visuals.
Perhaps the most intriguing new feature is the AI-driven upscaling technology, dubbed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. This machine learning-based technology promises to deliver super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail to games, potentially revolutionising the visual fidelity of console gaming.
Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, expressed pride in the PS5’s impact on the gaming industry and excitement for the new possibilities the PS5 Pro will bring. “We’re pleased to offer PS5 Pro alongside the current PS5 console this holiday, and we look forward to seeing continued gameplay innovation from our talented game creators that unleash the possibilities of the PS5 hardware for years to come,” Nishino stated.
Games that take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s enhanced features will be designated as “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” Some of the titles set to receive this enhancement include popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, among others.
Compatibility is a key focus for Sony, with all PS5 games playable on the PS5 Pro. The console will also feature PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can enhance the performance of over 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games. Current PS5 accessories, including the PlayStation VR2 and DualSense Edge wireless controller, will be compatible with the new console.
The PS5 Pro’s launch just in time for the holiday shopping season is sure to excite gamers looking for the ultimate console experience. Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro will begin on 26 September 2024, giving eager fans the chance to secure their consoles ahead of the November release.
As we approach the launch date, it will be interesting to see how game developers leverage the PS5 Pro’s enhanced capabilities to create more immersive and visually stunning gaming experiences. The PS5 Pro certainly seems poised to set a new benchmark in console gaming, potentially influencing the direction of the industry for years to come.
