Sonos has just announced a massive update to an existing product line-up which is the Sonos Play:5 speakers. Even though I’ve never experienced their PLAY:5 yet personally (which is the top premium model), my ears were already pampered with their amazing lower-end PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 speaker units.
The audio quality is simply superb and the wireless system is cool and intuitive.
Sonos PLAY:5 (2015)
The new Sonos PLAY:5 is built with six synchronized, custom designed drivers: 3 mid-woofers and 3 tweeters which deliver superior audio quality and a wider sound stage coming from a single speaker unit.
Sonos PLAY:5 can be placed horizontally for a single arrangement (hopefully while you are saving cash for the extra one) or vertically if you pair 2 PLAY:5 speakers together to deliver stereo sound (check out my PLAY:3 review to find out how they can be set up together).
In terms of design quality, according to Sonos, every little detail is not overlooked, including the placement of 60,000 individually drilled holes in the grill and the materials used. From the product shots, they look gorgeous.
Sonos Play:5 will retail for AUD 749 so you may want to start saving.
Sonos Trueplay
Owners of an existing Sonos system need not feel left out Sonos has also introduced “Trueplay“, a smart tuning technology that detects a room configuration where the speaker is in (by emitting special tones which will then analyse how the sounds are reflected through the walls and objects in the room) and automatically tunes itself to sound best for the acoustics of that room.
Sonos Truplay can be accessed on Sonos’ iOS app for free. For running Sonos Truplay on an Android app, you may have to wait a bit longer.
